Personality Development through Sports

A person with all his physical, mental, emotional, cultural, and social abilities and with professional skills satisfies his needs. While doing so, he has some specific interactions with his environment, and thus personality development through sports takes place. This interaction is dependent on his peculiar mental makeup and the situation. This arises at a particular event, shaping his personality.

The interaction produces such a behavioral chemical which may differ in actual patterns. But it differs from person to person and from event to event. But even then, there remains a very peculiar constant feature of a person which reveals his personality. The personality in his family and social and cultural life is observed. In the history of different countries, these personalities are observed by their confirmed virtues, activities, and devotion of their lives to certain causes. Their names have images of their many qualities as different artists, politicians, and players too.

Personality Traits

Every player has his unique personality. Different sports require some specific personality traits. It has been observed that some personality traits have been quite useful to achieve better performance in particular sports events. Yet certain trends need to be developed while the students are in the education process to develop their personality traits:

Regularity and Punctuality: Observed sports behavior is the main feature of a sportsman’s personality. E.g. Sachin Tendulkar -batting, Ronaldo -Kicking. The actions and movements of the cricketers are much popular even among children. Developing sports behavior in the form of physical skills needs real worship of the same action for years together. The body and mind also need to be toned for such continued action. Regular practice of all the physical activities and skills makes the body execute certain actions like a
machine. A punctual person values his own time and of others too. Also, aided by such an important factor in personality, a student is sure to rise to his estimation of success.

Sociability and Tolerance: When a player participates in a game, he experiences chances to interact with the players of his own and the opponent’s team. Friends, organizers, coaches, referees, and the huge crowd of spectators, interact with him in various dimensions.

Sense of Time and place: For the development of a sense of time and place he has to participate in many competitions at various levels.

Qualities required for personality development

Intelligence, Interpretation and Judgement: The games in which reasoning, judgment, perceptual understanding are required, certain manipulation of speed and such other qualities are essential.

Body Concept and Perception: A competition demand’s a firm, attractive and challenging personality to stand with confidence in front of their opponents.

Specific Personality Characteristics: Introverts and extroverts, confident, courageous, daring and dashing nature, aggressive and firmness, loyal to his job, sincere, perseverance, urge in achieving aim are important characteristics for a player.

Participation in sports activities has also been found to make people more open-minded. It is more receptive to new ideas and more appreciative of the good things about other cultures. To sum up, love, understanding, and tolerance for mankind, the greatest of human virtues are promoted through sports. The very aim and motto of the modern Olympics are to spread the message of love, understanding, and peace worldwide. Sports bind humanity into one.
